Government Contracts

Government contracts data from USAspending.gov, the U.S. Treasury's official record of federal award spending. This page covers federal contracts across 66 agencies and 68,184 recipients whose work began in the last 24 months, showing which agencies commit the most value, which industries they buy from, and where the work is performed. Grants and other financial assistance are excluded, so every figure counts contracts only.

Same axis on all three. Energy concentrates in facilities support and physical R&D, its national labs. Defense spreads across aircraft, engineering and missiles. Comparable at a glance, which a single flow diagram is not.

Total recorded lifetime value of contracts in this cohort. Award counts and average award size are withheld: coverage is incomplete in a way that varies by agency, so those figures are not comparable between agencies.

Quarterly spend and new award starts
Reserved for transaction-level dataMost awards are amended after they start, so dating them by their latest action moves spend into the wrong quarter. This fills in once transaction-level rows are ingested.

Source: USAspending.gov (U.S. Treasury), contracts only. Records held span 1977-06-01 to 2026-07-28 by work start date. Time windows select contracts whose period of performance began inside them, which is not the same as contracts awarded inside them. Award value is each contract's cumulative lifetime value, so a figure for a window is the total value of that cohort of contracts, not spending during the period. Records are still being ingested and coverage varies by agency, so values are shown as rankings rather than exact totals, and award counts and average award size are not shown at all. A further 5,708 contracts ($59.3B) carry no work start date and are excluded from every window above. Awards restate as they are amended, so totals move.
